There is simply no other choice. If we allow them to exist, we will have the deaths of thousands of people on our hands; furthermore, these people will have died for no good reason whatsoever - a shameful, pointless waste of life. The legal truth of the matter, as it happens, is that these websites already violate many federal and state laws. In the case of pro-suicide websites, this is obvious: the webmasters, by peddling information about how to commit suicide and encouraging people to commit suicide, are actually assisting in suicides, and that is most certainly a felony. There are also many charges one could file against the people who run the pro-ana websites: assisted suicide (in the case of death), medical malpractice, wrongful death (in the case of death), reckless endangerment, child endangerment (in the case of young persons under the age of 18), manslaughter, and many others. The only reason criminal charges haven't been brought up against the people who run these websites is that the courts are already overloaded with cases, and have much bigger fish to fry. But when our people start dying in droves due to the malicious advice peddled on these websites, you can bet that the government will take action. France has already outlawed pro-ana sites, and other countries are very likely to follow suit. Let's hope the US government follows suit before these websites kill any more people. For example, if someone yells "FIRE!" in a crowded movie theater, the solution to that problem isn't more speech - you have to simply prevent that in the first place. The truth is that people can be powerfully sucked in by negative ideas, like those on the pro-ana sites. By the time "more speech" happens, for many of these impressionable women, it's too late - they are already fully committed to self-starvation. This problem is even more dangerous when you consider those pro-suicide websites; just one visit can convince somebody to blow their brains out, and by the time you've tried to convince them not to kill themselves, they could very well be dead already. Here's another good analogy: should we allow people to physically assault one another, and at the same time encourage physical "defense" of the assault victims with even more violence? Obviously not. The ideas that pro-ana, pro-suicide, and many other types of websites are so dangerous that to NOT silence them is to invite disaster. Ideas that dangerous and destructive have no place in society, just as we don't allow people to call up other countries, pretend to be the President or some other high-ranking official, and tell them that the USA is about to attack them. You could argue freedom of speech, but such freedom would probably result in a nuclear war. The result of allowing pro-ana and pro-suicide sites to peddle their ideas will be thousands and thousands of dead that could have been saved if we only had the courage to stand up to them before it was too late.
